![]() On 18 November, Boris Johnson unveiled the government's 10-point plan to tackle climate change - roughly 12 months before the UK hosts the landmark COP26 climate conference. The other two are in the aviation sector, which is responsible for growing emissions of CO2 as more people travel. Nine are energy generators, which use carbon-based fuels to generate electricity. The 15 firms are a mix of heavy industry, power generators and airlines owners.įour firms in the top 15 are in energy intensive industries –meaning they use huge amounts of energy in making things they sell on. Sky News has found that 15 companies paid to emit 67 million tonnes of CO2, which is a sixth of all the UK's carbon dioxide emissions in 2019. The rest is non-traded, that means no one is charged for this carbon dioxide. ![]() That is 435 million tonnes.Ī third of these emissions are traded in the EU carbon market, which means that companies have to pay for emitting CO2. This space represents the total CO2 emissions produced in the UK in 2019.
